Smoothie Goodness - berries all round

Anyone that has read my BabyCues book knows that my recommendations to breastfeeding mother’s about certain foods is one of moderation. I teach breastfeeding mother’s to be mindful of how many carbohydrates, gaseous foods and sugars they have each day, so they can confidently feed knowing they are limiting possible digestive discomfort for their baby. This berry charged smoothie is no exception to that information. Full of so much goodness, this drink does has a high level of natural sugar. Therefore, if you do choose to delight your taste buds with this fantastic tasting smoothie may I suggest that you make this your quota of sugar intake for the day. I also suggest that if your baby gets more upset two to four hours after you have this then perhaps this amount of fruit is to much for them all at once, so you may want to replace some berries with banana. After saying all that, let's take a look at the immense healthy refuel you will be giving yourself and baby!

Blueberries hold powerful antioxidants that optimize health by combating free radical that damage cellular structures, inclusive of DNA. In one cup alone you will receive good sources of vitamin K, Vitamin C, manganese and fibre. Blueberries also apparently protect against varicose veins (YAY – I need to eat truck loads) inflammations, high blood pressure and are considered good for diabetics.

Raspberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, manganese and dietary fibre while also offering copper, vitamin K, pantothenic acid (otherwise known as B5, which can alleviate conditions like asthma, hair loss, allergies, stress and anxiety) folate, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acid and potassium. Wow! Why wouldn’t you have some fresh raspberries?

Goji berries are a fabulous source of protein, calcium, dietary fibre, iron, potassium, zinc and selenium, plus vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6 and E – some call these ‘super berries’ and it’s easy to see why. But don’t overdo them, the recommended daily dose is around 20-30grams of whole berries.

So, how do you make this delicious cocktail of goodness?

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds (also great for you and baby)
  • 3 tbsp goji berries, dried
  • 1 ½ cups blueberries, frozen is fine too
  • 1 ½ cups raspberries, again frozen is fine
  • ¾ cup of green tea, cooled.

Soak the chia seeds and goji berries in the green tea for 5-10 minutes then blend. Add the berries and blend again.

Please feel free to let me know whether you enjoyed this, if you do partake.
Positive health to you x
